‘Joanie’ Wins Division 2:00 Shy Of Trials Bid
Joan Samuelson’s bid to qualify for the Olympic marathon trials at yesterday’s Boston Marathon probably were dashed a week ago, according to published reports.
The 53-year-old was gunning for a 2:46 finish that would’ve earned her a berth in the Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston in January. But a week ago, she apparently developed back spasms.
She still finished in an impressive 2:51:29, made all the more impressive due to her back problem. That earned her the top spot in the women’s 50-54 age group.
The injury prompted thoughts of dropping out prior to the race, but didn’t want to because her daughter was running Boston for the first time.
She told the Portland Press Herald (of Maine, where she lives) that it won’t be her last Boston Marathon. “It was great to be back on the Boston course,” Joan said. “It’s been 18 years. I’ll do it again when I can run with reckless abandon.”
